Our overnight train (The Orient Express, as I prefer to call it) pulled into the town of Huangshan after leaving Shanghai 12 hours earlier. Huangshan is the Yellow Mountain region of China, famous for its scenic beauty of granite peaks, weathered Pine trees, and the mysterious fog that has inspired Chinese artists for centuries. In many ways it is the Yosemite of China. It was also a welcome treat to gain altitude which put us above the heat and humidity. But an even greater surprise was finding out we were going to stay up at one of the mountain hotels overnight. Therefore, we got more time in this UNESCO World Heritage Site than originally planned! It was a wonderful gift to get more time to hike around, have a nice dinner, and be able to get up early the next day for the famous sunrise.
